India launches committee to examine nuclear deal with US

India's government has set up a committee to examine concerns over a nuclear deal with the United States that critics say could undermine the country's nuclear weapons program and independent foreign policy. Creation of the committee, announced by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee late Tuesday, was vehemently demanded by communist parties, which provide critical support for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's Congress party-led government. The pact should not be implemented until concerns have been addressed, the communists and the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party say.
