Iranian man sets himself ablaze outside parliament

An Iranian official said on Sunday that a man had set himself on fire in front of the country's parliament building. Some local news media reported on Saturday that the man was a disabled 1980s Iran-Iraq war veteran and died after he set himself ablaze because a lawmaker refused to discuss his problems. But on Sunday, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said the man was an ex-convict who wasn't a war veteran. He said the man set himself on fire on Saturday - but didn't elaborate. War veterans are highly respected in Iran, but some criticize the government for not paying enough attention to their needs.
