Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is most likely to receive the support of Turkey when he visits Ankara on Wednesday to further international efforts to resolve the standoff with Iran over its disputed nuclear program.
Lavrov's visit to Turkey, which borders Iran, comes before a meeting by foreign ministers of the five permanent UN Security Council members and Germany on Thursday in Vienna, Austria, to consider proposals intended to reward Iran if it gives up uranium enrichment and punish it if it does not.
Turkey, a US ally and NATO member, has so far taken a middle-of-the-road approach, defending Iran's right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes but also calling on the country to "be transparent."
