Macedonia ready to find solution with Greece

The Macedonian president said Thursday his country is ready to compromise in an ongoing dispute over its name with Greece, but is not willing to deny Macedonia's national and cultural identity. President Branko Crvenkovski emphasized the "absurdity" of the name issue and blamed Greece for blocking his country's access to the European Union and NATO. Athens argues its neighbor's name implies territorial claims on a northern Greek province also called Macedonia. Macedonia denies that. The dispute led to Greece vetoing Macedonia's NATO accession bid in April. "My country, despite the obvious absurdity of the issue, participates actively and constructively in the negotiation process with the Republic of Greece," Crvenkovski told world leaders at the UN General Assembly.
