Montenegro to pay families of deported Muslims

Montenegro has awarded compensation of €4.1 million ($5.7 million) to the families of Muslims who fled Bosnia's 1992-95 war only to be sent back to Bosnian Serb custody where most were killed, a government official said Friday. The Montenegrin government announced the compensation after an agreement struck with victims' families who had sued the state over the wartime deportations, said Justice Minister Miras Radovic. Montenegro backed the Serb side against the country's Muslims and Croats during Bosnia's 1992-95 war that erupted after the breakup of the former Yugoslavia. About 80 Bosnian civilians who fled to Montenegro were sent back to their native Bosnia in 1992 and handed over to the Bosnian Serbs. Most of them were later killed, while some were kept in Serb prison camps.
