The Australian Cabinet has agreed to sell uranium to India on condition that inspectors are allowed to ensure the nuclear fuel is used only for peaceful power generation, a newspaper reported Wednesday.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer declined to comment on discussions held on the subject by Cabinet's National Security Committee Tuesday night.
"If we're ever to sell uranium to India, it's a bit down the track," Downer told Australian Broadcasting Corp. television late Tuesday after the meeting of senior ministers.
"If we were to go down the path of negotiating an agreement with India, we wouldn't sell uranium that could be used in any way at all for any military purpose," he added.
