Italian news agencies reported a woman has been pulled alive from the rubble 42 hours after a powerful earthquake ravaged the city.
The ANSA and Apcom news agencies say the young woman was conscious and speaking to firefighters throughout the rescue operation Tuesday night at a building in L'Aquila's historic center.
The reports said her leg had been trapped under a big piece of masonry but she was sheltered in a space created by fallen concrete pillars.
Officials at firefighters headquarters in L'Aquila could not immediately confirm the rescue. The city closed off the historic center after a strong aftershock damaged already weakened buildings.
