A hijacked plane that was flown to Spain's Canary Islands from Mauritania was raided by security forces and a suspect arrested, according to the Foreign Ministry. There was no immediate word on any casualties.
"It has been liberated," said ministry spokesman Manuel Cacho. "The hijacker has been detained." Cacho said authorities believe just one hijacker was involved.
The Boeing 737 had landed at a military airport in Gran Canaria and was immediately surrounded by paramilitary Civil Guard police. Those forces moved in and ended the standoff a short time later.
Spanish media reported that the Air Mauritania passenger plane with 71 passengers and eight crew members aboard was hijacked after it left the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott. It was not clear what the motive of the hijacking was.
