Sudanese security officials arrested a former high-ranking government official and leading member of the country's largest opposition party Saturday, alleging he and several others were planning a coup, the semiofficial Sudan Media Center reported.
Mubarak al-Fadil had served as Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir's adviser, but left in 2004 and rejoined the opposition Umma party.
"The former presidential assistant was arrested along with a number of retired army generals, including retired general Mohamed Ali Hamid, who worked as deputy director for security, as well as former minister of tourism, Abdel Jelil al-Basha," SMC reported. The news agency quoted what it described as a high-ranking security official close to the case.
