US criticizes China's proliferation activities

Senior US officials on Thursday criticized China's efforts to curb the spread of missiles and weapons technology, singling out sales to Iran as particularly worrying. China's nonproliferation record has improved in recent years, said David Sedney, deputy assistant secretary of defense for East Asia; but Chinese businesses continue to sell weapons in violation of the government's commitments. "There remain serious gaps between China's official rhetoric and its achievements," Sedney told a congressional advisory panel. The United States, he said, has repeatedly raised worries about Chinese companies' weapons sales with Beijing, providing specific information about transfers.
