Iran: Fugitive businessman arrested after escape

Iran's most wanted fugitive businessman was arrested in a neighboring Arab country after escaping from authorities in February, Iran's justice ministry said Sunday. Shahram Jazayeri had been sentenced in 2002 to 27 years prison for embezzlement in a high-profile conviction that was part of a crackdown on graft ordered by Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In accordance with the Islamic law enforced in Iran, Jazayeri was also sentenced to 50 lashes. His prison term was later reduced to 14 years, Iranian media reported. He escaped on Feb. 20 while being transferred from court to prison, newspapers reported at the time.
