Iranian parliamentary election set for March 2008

Iran's constitutional watchdog has approved March 14, 2008 as the date for parliamentary elections, state-run television reported Saturday. "The Guardian Council has agreed to holding of parliamentary elections on March 14, 2008," the television quoted council spokesman Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei as saying. Hard-line conservatives gained control of the parliament in the February 2004 elections after the Guardian Council barred thousands of reformists from running. The dispute provoked one of the most bitter crises in Iran. Earlier this month, the conservative-dominated parliament for the third time approved legislation that would allow it to extend its own term but reduce the president's term.
