Merkel: Incentive package created with eye to Iranians' future

German Chancellor declines to comment on details of what the package contained.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Tuesday that the incentive package offered to Iran was created with an eye to giving Iranians "prospects for their future." Merkel declined to comment on details of what the package contained, saying it had been agreed the Iranians would have a chance to contemplate it first, but noted it had been created with "an eye to the positive development of the Iranian people."

EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana delivered the incentives to Tehran earlier Tuesday. The package was developed by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany and designed to persuade Iran to curb its nuclear program. "It is diverse and was drawn up with the idea of giving Iranians prospects for their future," Merkel told reporters after meeting with French President Jacques Chirac. "I very much hope that Iran examines this package intensively and sees it as a real chance for the diplomatic solution of the conflict," Merkel said.
