A life-size Lego replica of the Beresheet lunar lander was unveiled on Thursday by SpaceIL president Morris Kahn to open the month-long Lego Space Park at the Tel Aviv Convention Center.
The structure was created by artist Yuval Dvorin to match the actual size of the lunar lander launched into space earlier this year. The replica contains more than 100,000 Lego bricks and weighs close to 400 pounds.
The actual spacecraft looked like a futuristic washing machine and weighed about 1,300 pounds (about 600 kg.) at launch, most of which was fuel.
Beresheet, the Hebrew word for the Book of Genesis, was the smallest lunar craft ever launched into space, measuring only 1.5 meters x 2 meters (about 5’ x 6.5’). The privately funded project cost $100 million, which was significantly less than other space vehicles.
Lego Space Park is a collaborative effort between Lego International and SpaceIL. The park contains more than five million Lego blocks.
