In the school of life there are many teachers, and Ohad Naharin is most certainly one of them. Beyond cultivating and providing a home for countless talented dancers, it seems that Naharin is able to impart priceless knowledge to his pupils about how to compose and choreograph dance works. The individuals surrounding Naharin seem to often find themselves dusted with a touch of fairy dust. A few graduates of his unofficial academy of dance creation are Inbal Pinto, Hofesh Shechter and Andrea Miller.
At the beginning of next week, Batsheva Dance Company will host its annual Dancers Create evening. Twelve original works by 14 current company members (and potentially future great choreographers) will be premiered during the evening, titled “Another Day.”
The Dancers Create initiative was started 11 years ago as a platform for company members to express their individual voices. Over the years, many local companies came to host their own version of this event. For the dancers of Batsheva, who spend most of the season on stage either in Israel or abroad, the evening represents a moment to stop, take stock and explore their own, unique vision. The possibility to present work encourages many who would perhaps not consider choreography to try their hand at it.
The lineup for this year includes works by Oscar Ramos, Iyar Elezra, Ori Moshe Ofri, Bobbi Smith, Eri Nakamura, Maayan Sheinfeld, Ian Robinson, Bret Easterling, Maya Tamir and Omri Drumlevich. Also to take the stage are Or Schraiber, Zina Zinchenko, Nitsan Ressler, Nadav Zelner, Luc Jacobs and Shaked Leibzirer. The performances will take place at Varda Hall in the Suzanne Dellal Center.
“Another Day” will take place on September 21, 22 and 23. For tickets and more information, visit www.batsheva.co.il.
