In a comprehensive operation that took place last weekend between Rosh Hanikra and Acre, supervisors from the fishing department of the Agriculture Ministry, in coordination with the Israel Nature and National Parks Protection Authority (INNPPA), apprehended illegal fishermen along with their equipment. According to the director of the fishing department, Haim Angoni, some 10 divers who fished by using air tanks and underwater rifles received citations for illegal fishing practices. Eight rifles and other equipment were confiscated. A boat carrying an illegal fishing net was taken as well. Israeli law prohibits fishing by use of air tanks and rifles, and a professional fishing license must be obtained in order to utilize fishing nets. An Agriculture Ministry statement urged the public to purchase fish strictly from businesses, which obtain their product from legally licensed fishermen.
