As of Friday, Ehud Olmert is the Interim Prime Minister of Israel in accordance with the Basic Law: Government, which determines that if a Prime Minister is incapacitated for 100 days, he will be considered to be permanently incapacitated and will be replaced by an Interim Prime Minister, who will govern until a new Prime Minister and cabinet is approved by the Knesset.
Former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered a cerebral hemorrhage on the night of January 4, 2006 and has been hospitalized ever since. Friday marks the 100th day since he fell ill and could no longer discharge his duties.
On Tuesday, the day before Pessah, the cabinet met and endorsed Olmert as Interim Prime Minister. Olmert has also been charged by President Moshe Katsav with the duty of forming a new government. Dan Izenberg
