Ben-Yizri demands budget to treat killer bacteria

Health Minister Ya'acov Ben-Yizri met with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Thursday afternoon and briefed him about the spread of the Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria, which has caused the death of more than 120 very sick patients in hospitals around the country in recent months. Ben-Yizri presented to Olmert the increased budget required by the health establishment in order to deal with the virulent bacteria that mainly infects patients who have been hospitalized for more than 25 days. The health establishment is demanding an extra NIS 2.5 million to fund an additional 3,000 hospital beds for the next eight years. Earlier Thursday, Ben-Yizri was briefed by hospital representatives from around the country regarding the spread of the bacteria.
