Bibi: 'Convergence' good for Hamas

Says plan is illogical, efforts should be made to make Hamas-led PA collapse.

Likud head Binyamin Netanyahu said Monday morning that Hamas will be the only party satisfied by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's "convergence" plan. He said there was no sense to the plan, which consisted of giving up all of Israel's bargaining chips. He said that he supported a plan of withholding resources from the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority, in order to engineer its collapse.

In an interview with Israel Radio, he continued to blast the Gaza disengagement plan, saying that the plan was extremely costly, strengthened Hamas, endangered Jordan and didn't leave Israel with anything bargaining chip with which to conduct negotiations. He added, "We need to wake up from this illusion and change our policy to one which will lead to the downfall of Hamas." In response to Netanyahu's comments, Interior Minister Roni Bar-On said: "Bibi would leave us in Gaza forever." He continued, "Saying that the Kassam's landing in Sderot is the fault of disengagement is cheap demagoguery." He added that the Israeli public had already demonstrated what it thought of Netanyahu's views when Likud barely acquired 12 mandates.
