In the midst of an unprecedented wave of metal theft for sale as scrap, thieves pried loose the bronze names of 557 soldiers etched on the wall of memorial for fallen of the Logistics Corps in the center of the country.
The theft was only discovered Thursday, Army radio reported. The Logistics Corps memorial is located at Hadid, just north of Latrun. Police reportedly said the desecration was done for criminal motives by scrap metal hunters who sell the bronze lettering by weight.
The theft occurred on Monday night, Erev Simchat Torah. The sites are usually open to the public and never locked.
This was the latest in a number of desecrations reported at various military memorials that have seen the bronze lettering and plaques disappear.
