World-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma received the prestigious and valuable Dan David Prize on Sunday at Tel-Aviv University.
The prize was awarded to him in recognition of his "Silk Road Project" and its contribution to international cultural understanding.
The prize Ma won is worth $1 million. In his acceptance speech, he said he would share it with the musicians, board members and staff of the project.
Ma set up the "Silk Road Project" in 1988 to explore the common threads of culture and music in various societies. "I believe that when we enlarge our view of the world, we also deepen our understanding of our own lives and culture," he said in a mission statement on the project's Web site.
The Dan David Prize is awarded each year to individuals "for making unique contributions to humanity," according to a statement from the foundation.
