Construction and demolition waste enforcement unit to be formed

A new construction and demolition waste (C&DW) enforcement unit was launched last week by the Environmental Protection Ministry. The unit's new head, Yochai Rotem, will be responsible for 11 inspectors who will combat illegal dumping nationwide. The unit will be under the auspices of the Nature and Parks Authority. Most of the seven million tons of C&DW produced annually is dumped illegally in open spaces, such as alongside roads and parking lots in national forests. The phenomenon has been growing in recent years. The waste is a blight on nature and a potential contaminant of air, water and ground. A small percentage is either dumped in official landfills or recycled.
