Eini to mediate between teachers, gov't; may call general strike

Histadrut Labor Organization Chairman Ofer Eini said on Sunday he would act as mediator between the government and the striking Secondary School Teachers' Organization (SSTO), in order to bring to an end a strike which has lasted more than three weeks, Israel Radio reported.
Eini said he would contact Finance Minister Roni Bar-On, Education Minister Yuli Tamir and SSTO Chairman Ran Erez and call on them to meet Sunday in order to negotiate a solution to the continuing crisis.
The Histadrut empowered Eini in a meeting earlier in the day to take any steps necessary in order to resolve the conflict, including a general strike. Eini planned to meet with representatives of both sides before deciding what steps to take, Army Radio said.
