Ashkenazi decides on harsh treatment for Tamir, who let son drive IDF buggy.

Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi informed Brig.-Gen. Moshe (Chico) Tamir, the former head of the Gaza Division, on Sunday that he would not appoint him to a new position in the IDF.The decision effectively ousts Tamir from the army. Ashkenazi met Sunday with Tamir and informed him of the decision, the IDF said.Tamir, 45, had been waiting for a new appointment following his conviction last year for permitting his 14-year-old son to drive an IDF dune buggy and then attempting to cover up his subsequent accident.A military court accepted Tamir’s appeal against his conviction inNovember, and overruled a decision to demote him to the rank ofcolonel. The court recommended, however, that he not be promoted for aperiod of two years.Tamir is considered one of the IDF’s best field commanders with anexemplary combat career in the Golani Brigade. He served as commanderof the Gaza Division until several months before Operation Cast Leadlast year.Military sources said Ashkenazi had decided to send a clear messagethat the IDF would not tolerate “breaking the rules” of acceptableconduct, even by top officers. But they noted that Tamir’s departurewould be a loss for the army.
