Former Nahariya mayor Ron Frumer was convicted on Monday of corruption and failure to announce agreements while running for the 2003 municipal elections which he won. The Haifa Magistrates Court's ruled on a case involving agreements Frumer signed with political opponents in which they promised not to run against him in exchange for certain incentives including local business proposals. Danny Hirsch, one of the original candidates in the 2005 elections and who later became Frumer's deputy, made an agreement with the former mayor to remove himself from the race. Hirsch is one of several other candidates who made similar deals with Frumer. Frumer and Hirsch were first questioned by the National Fraud Unit after the city's current mayor, Jackie Sabag, filed a civil suit against the result of the elections in 2005. The court ruled that the agreements, whereby other candidates backed Frumer and dropped out of the race, were tainted by illegalities. The court ordered new elections the same year, in which Sabag defeated Frumer. David Rudge contributed to this report.
