Mothers face jail after parents reject badatz compromise.
By JPOST.COM STAFFThe chairman of Noar Kahalcha, Yoav Laloum, told Israel TV on Monday that efforts to let a religious court (badatz) decide the case, fell through after the parents in the Emmanuel case refused to sign a commitment to abide by the badatz decision.Laloum, who originally took the case to the high court, said he had agreed to let the badatz decide, but had insisted that the parents sign a commitment to abide by its decision. The fathers are already in jail.Laloum said he had rabbinical authorization to turn to the high court and that he only submitted the case to the court after other avenues had failed. The rabbi who authorized him to turn to the court is Rabbi Ya'akov Yosef, the son of Shas founder Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef. Rabbi Ya'akov Yosef has said he wants no further role in the case after threatswere made against his family. Channel 2 news said on Monday that a group of Sephardi rabbis had gone to see Ya'akov Yosef to press him to maintain his support for the case.The high court's decision to jail the parents has been bitterly attacked by Ashkenazi rabbis.Laloum stressed that while integrated schools do exist in Emmanuel, the school in question, a primary school for girls, is not integrated.
