Israel Railways employees declare unexpected strike

The employees of Israel Railways declared an immediate strike as of midnight Wednesday, canceling all of the northbound and southbound lines in Israel. The management of the company and the Histadrut labor federation condemned the move, calling it "wild and irresponsible." Management said that it would turn to the National Labor Court with a request that it issue an injunction against the strike. The deliberation began at 8:00 a.m. at the Haifa labor court. The Histadrut said that it would not support the "unruly and illegal" strike. The management of Israel Railways said that it "act with all of the legal means at its disposal against the participants of the illegal strike." There were reports of unusually heavy traffic throughout the country Thursday morning.
