Israel sentences Hamas lawmaker to prison

An IDF military court has sentenced the speaker of the Palestinian parliament to 36 months in prison for belonging to the militant Islamic Hamas movement. Abdel Aziz Duaik was arrested by Israel in August 2006. The court said he has served 28 1/2 months of his sentence and will be released after another 7 1/2 months. Duaik, who's 60, suffers from high blood pressure and diabetes. The judge said Tuesday he considered Duaik's age and health when determining the sentence. Israel has arrested 40 Hamas lawmakers since June 2006, when Palestinian terrorists captured IDF soldier Gilad Schalit in a cross-border raid. Seven have been released after finishing their terms, but Hamas demands Israel release the rest as part of an exchange deal.
