Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said Tuesday that time was running out on a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
"Time is working against us," she told a gala reception held in Jerusalem in honor of the 100th anniversary of the American Jewish Committee. "Time is working against those who believe in a two-state solution," she said.
Livni said questions have been raised - "especially in Europe" - about the need for a Jewish state, and that it was being suggested that a single state be created, between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.
"What we have to say, in a very clear message, is that the whole idea of a two-state solution is to give Israel the possibility to live as a Jewish state," she said, adding that the same message must be delivered on behalf of the Palestinians, that they too must have "their own national state."
Livni also criticized the idea of the "New Jew" promoted by early Zionists. "Creating a new Israeli goes against the concept of Israel being the homeland for the Jewish people," she said.
Livni, who is also minister of immigration absorption, declared that "the raison d'etre to be here, to live here to fight for the existence of the State of Israel, is to keep the common denominator between the Jews who are living in Israel and the Jews who are not living in Israel."
