Olmert to convene former prime ministers' council

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will convene for the first time the informal former prime ministers' council on Monday, Channel 1 reported. Ehud Barak, Likud Chairman Binyamin Netanyahu and Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres will be attending the meeting. Some two months ago, Netanyahu and Olmert met and decided to establish the forum in order to tap into the expertise of those who had served in Israel's highest executive position. The forum is intended to deal with issues that constitute major strategic threats to Israel, with Iran first among them. The council is an informal consultative body with no official standing. Former prime minister Yitzhak Shamir will not participate in the forum due to his advancing age and poor health.
