Ariel Sharon called telephoned OC Manpower Maj.-Gen. Elezar Stern on Saturday to express his support after Stern was assaulted by Jewish activists Friday at Jerusalem's Western Wall.
Sharon said that he viewed “this deplorable act of violence†with utmost gravity and commended Stern's decision to return to the site for prayers on Saturday, according to spokesmen for the Prime Minister's Office.
Stern was involved in the evacuation of Jews from the Gaza Strip this summer, and thus apparently incurred the anger of disengagement opponents praying at the holy site Friday.
