Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Monday that if Syria were to stop supporting violence and terror - particularly Iran, Hamas and Hizbullah - there was "no doubt" that Israel could begin negotiations with the Arab country.
Speaking at a Kadima faction meeting, Olmert said he believed his meeting on Saturday with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas would lead to more meetings and that although it would not guarantee peace and security, at least Israel would maintain a diplomatic horizon.
Regarding Syria, Olmert said, "I advise Assad not to make bombastic declarations and instead take the real steps that we all want."
The Syrian regime has approached Israel with offers of peace talks without preconditions - a move that has met with suspicion.
