In the third corruption scandal in a little over a week, Israel Police announced that they had detained for questioning the regional supervisor for building and planning in the Shfela region on suspicion that he accepted bribes.
An additional six people were arrested for offering bribes in exchange for building privileges, police said Monday. Police suspect that the supervisor received the bribes in order to speed up requests made by contractors and to ignore building code violations.
The investigation was revealed only a day after Central District police arrested three senior officials in the Petah Tikva municipality, on suspicion of corruption.
Police revealed Sunday afternoon that over the past two months an undercover investigation led by the Central District's Fraud Squad had been investigating the municipality's comptroller, the head of the haredi education system, and a member of the city council who also serves as the head of the Ezer Mizion Foundation. The investigation was only made public after the three were arrested Sunday.
Last week, Lod Mayor Benny Regev was one of 12 people also arrested on bribery-related charges after a Fraud Squad investigation.
