"Olmert's speech stemmed from his will to win back the support of the political center-left which he has lost in recent months." said MK Silvan Shalom (Likud) on Tuesday.
During an interview with Israel Radio, Shalom also cast doubt on the chances of securing the release of captured IDF soldier Cpl. Gilad Shalit. "Also in Lebanon Olmert declared that the goals were the return of the captured IDF soldiers and disarming Hizbullah, and neither of these goals were met," he said
Shalom added that the prime minister's words meant that he was allowing Hamas to remain armed.
