Shamgar opposes changing A-G appointment process

Retired Supreme Court president Meir Shamgar said Sunday that he rejected a proposal by Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann to return to the government the responsibility for appointing attorneys-general. The reasons for such decisions must be examined carefully, Shamgar told Israel Radio, and only after it is certain that the decision was problematic should it be reopened for discussion. "In my opinion, the proposal [of the committee that changed the process] was a good one that strengthened the rule of law in Israel and the position of independent bodies. There is no reason to change the status quo," Shamgar argued.
