State ordered to pay NIS 937,000 in damages to boy blinded at school

The state will pay NIS 937,000 in damages to a boy who was blinded in one eye while at school, the Haifa District Court ruled on Thursday. According to Army Radio, the incident occurred six years ago, when the then-nine-year-old boy was injured by a pencil case zipper while playing with several classmates. Afterwards, the boy was declared permanently handicapped. Judge Yael Vilner wrote in her decision that "the teachers' obligation to supervise and watch over [the children] is based on a contract between the student and his parents, and the school administration, which commits to keeping [the student] safe and whole. Therefore, this is a breach of contract."
