Transportation ministry gets chief scientist for first time in decade

The Ministry of Transportation has hired a chief scientist for the first time in 11 years - transportation planning Prof. Yossi Parshkar of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. He will take up his post in a few weeks. Parshkar has headed several academic committees advising the transportation systems of the country's larger cities. I "will provide new input into [the ministry's] activities by expanding [the use of] technology, building a strong foundation for the transportation system by bringing in new science, along with improving the quality of the service," Parshkar said. The new chief scientist is planning to implement the Intelligent Transportation System. "ITS is a new vision for Israel, which will create an all-encompassing computer coordinated transportation system," Parshkar said. This will improve every source of transportation, from trains to roads, buses and even bike paths, he said. "I hope to bring about a better transportation system for Israel, making trains, roads, and buses more convenient for the people," Parshkar added.
