Weekly cabinet meeting opens with Olmert in charge

Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert convened the cabinet for its first weekly meeting Sunday since Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffering a massive stroke Wednesday. The ministers were slated to hear an update on Sharon's condition, which remained critical. The cabinet was not expected to make any major decisions, including whether to let Palestinians in east Jerusalem vote in the Palestinian elections on Jan. 25, Army Radio reported. This week's cabinet meeting was originally scheduled to be canceled in light of Sharon's planned catheterization last Thursday. But due to the prime minister's sudden illness, it was decided to hold the meeting to emphasize the continuity of the government.
