Next month, the IDF will receive 20 new Harley Davidsons for Military Police operations, to add to the 10 already in service. by the end of 2008 the IDF plans to have 60 operational Harley Davidsons. The decision to purchase the Harleys was made in 2005 by the IDF Logistics and Medical Corps. The bikes - the Sportster 883 model - are being purchased with military aid from the US. Each weighs 250 kilos, is fitted with a 900 cc engine and costs approximately $10,000. In addition to enforcing traffic regulations, the motorbikes will be used by Military Police for escorting dignitaries during ceremonies at the Kirya General Staff Headquarters in Tel Aviv.
