Yishai: Shas will quit coalition if child allowances not raised

Shas Chairman Eli Yishai threatened Wednesday to pull Shas out of the coalition if state child allowances, which have been cut significantly in recent years, are not raised. In an interview with Army Radio, the labor, trade and infrastructure minister also expressed ire over Minister of Welfare and Social Services Isaac Herzog's proposal to replace the allowances with a trust fund. According to the proposal, instead of going towards a family's monthly expenses, the funds would be accumulated and made available to the child when he reaches the age of 21. Shas's electorate, many of whom come from large, traditional families, would be the main ones hurt by the proposal.
