One year after the capture of Cpl. Gilad Schalit, the world Jewish community is still actively trying to bring him home.
On Monday, in the central business district of Melbourne, a rally attended by dozens of people was held by the State Zionist Council of Victoria (SZCV) to bring attention to the fact that Schalit, along with kidnapped reservists Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, are still missing.
Elly Shalev, a SZCV representative, told The Jerusalem Post that the time and location of the rally were specifically chosen in order to bring the most media attention as well as interaction with the surrounding community.
"We chose this date with the view that the one-year anniversary would have a greater chance of attracting local media attention. The location was also specifically chosen so as to create interaction with local Melbournians on their lunchtime break," she said.
The rally received support from Australian politicians who addressed the crowd, and Anat Kiviti-Manor, a close friend of Goldwasser, spoke as well.
The rally was the culmination of a week-long campaign to raise awareness of this issue throughout Australia.
The campaign included the use of blue ribbons as a visual reminder of the missing soldiers, as well as educational kits given to Jewish day schools throughout the country. A blog was also created to display news and resources to learn more about the three kidnapped soldiers, and to post messages of support to their families.
