Children carry out mass clean-up in ravine

Some 1,200 children from kindergartens, elementary schools and secondary schools in Eilat held a mass clean-up session in Wadi Shachmon recently as part of Eilat's 60th birthday celebrations, reports www.mynet.co.il. The children collected about 900 large bags of mostly human-produced garbage, such as plastic bags and bottles, from the ravine. According to the report, the venture was the idea of the district unit for environmental quality, a body run by the Nature and Parks Authority, the Society for the Protection of Nature, and other environmental organizations. A unit spokeswoman said that as well as the trash collected by the children, construction waste had also been found, and this would be removed by the city. All the children who took part in the clean-up received a t-shirt and were treated to a circus show at the end of the day.
