Haifa soccer stadium plans kick off at last

Plans to build a new soccer stadium and sports complex in Haifa finally kicked off last week with the announcement that a public tender has been announced for the ground work in the NIS 400 million project, reports www.local.co.il. The Haifa International Stadium company, a subsidiary of the municipal Haifa Economic Corporation, announced the public tender, which calls for the preparation of the grounds and infrastructure in readiness for the construction of the 32,000-seat stadium and sports complex. According to the report, company head Shimshon Harel said a company would be chosen and infrastructure work would begin in August, and a tender for the construction of the stadium itself would be issued by the end of the year. He said the entire project would cost NIS 400m. and the company was aiming for the stadium to be complete in time for the 2012-2013 soccer season. Mayor Yona Yahav said funding for the venture was coming from public and private sources, and that the complex would be one of the most advanced in the world. Businessman Sammy Ofer is reportedly donating a significant amount to the project.
