New firefighters to head for port

Haifa's firefighting service has begun testing candidates for a new firefighting unit to be stationed at the city's new port, reports www.mynet.co.il. Some 129 candidates are competing for 14 positions as firefighters, the biggest intake of new firefighters in the city in recent years. According to the report, the Israel Ports Company, the Interior Ministry, the Transport Ministry and the central Firefighters' Union all agreed that responsibility for extinguishing fires on ships anchored at the port should rest with the Firefighters' Union, and that a greater number of firefighters was needed to accomplish this. Nine of the 14 new firefighters will be stationed at the port, while the remaining five will be sent to fire stations around the city. The report said the 129 potential candidates were chosen after a selection process lasting several months, and are now being tested on their technical abilities, courage, general knowledge and other qualities. Firefighting officials said the tests were aimed at finding the best and most suitable candidates.
