Haifa's taxi drivers came out in protest last week against the city's decision to allow public transport lanes in some roads to be used by buses only, reports Yediot Haifa. The taxi drivers said the decision would harm their routes and their incomes, cause traffic jams and make taxi rides longer.
According to the report, taxi drivers from numerous competing companies have united to fight the decision, saying thousands of families will be affected. Taxi drivers blocked bus station entrances and have threatened to burn tires around the city to make their point. They have also taken the matter to court, where a hearing has been set for the end of April. The changes particularly affect the areas around the new light rail line.
