Police have recommended prosecuting Ramat Hasharon Mayor Itzik Rochberger and 14 other senior officials over allegations of bribery, fraud and breach of trust, reports local.co.il. The charges relate to fictitious accounts created by the clerks' labor organization (Histadrut Hapakidim), a unit of which was headed by Rochberger before he became mayor.
According to the report, investigators from the National Fraud Squad found that the clerks' organization created eight organizations that purported to provide annual, employer-subsidized training at hotels for employees. The investigators found that the employers' money was in fact used to provide benefits for senior officials in the clerks' organization, and their relatives. Rochberger, then head of a unit in the organization, was found to have taken an active part in the scheme.
In response, Rochberger denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the police had "turned political" and that "political sources" were trying to harm him. The Tel Aviv District prosecutor will now decide how to proceed with the case.
