Multinational forces carried out an airstrike in southern Iraq near the Iranian border killing three insurgents suspected of smuggling weapons into Iraq, the British military said Tuesday.
The raid took place early Monday in the town of al-Majar al-Kabir, near the city of Amarah, 320 kilometers (200 miles) southeast of Baghdad, the military said.
Iraqi police officials said Monday that a British helicopter struck the car of radical Shi'ite cleric Sheik Abu Jamal al-Fartousi, killing his brother and two guards.
Al-Fartousi, the secretary-general of the Islamic Movement in Iraq, was not the car when the attack occurred at about 10 a.m.
