A Hamas operative on Tuesday died of wounds sustained in last week's violent clashes between Hamas and Fatah loyalists in the Gaza Strip, medical officials said.
The man was wounded in a fight with a family linked to the rival Fatah movement last Friday. He was taken to an Israeli hospital, where he died Tuesday, said Dr. Moaiya Hassanain.
More than 30 people have died in fighting between Hamas and Fatah during a month of factional fighting. All of the deaths have been in Gaza, though political violence has begun to spread to the West Bank in recent days.
On Monday, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak appealed to Palestinians to stop the factional violence.
"The continuation of the infighting will undermine the Palestinian question and abort the aspirations of the Palestinian people," Mubarak told Egypt's Middle East News Agency (MENA).
Late Monday, five Hamas operatives were kidnapped by Fatah loyalists in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya. Three were released after about an hour following mediation by three other groups, according to one of the mediators. However, two others continued to be held, Hamas said.
On Sunday night, Fatah gunmen went on a rampage throughout the city, destroying several businesses, charities and cars belonging to Hamas figures and supporters.
