The British embassy in Tehran has been temporarily closed, Politico reported on Wednesday.

Politico cited a government spokesperson saying: "We have temporarily closed the British Embassy in Tehran, this will now operate remotely. Foreign Office travel advice has now been updated to reflect this consular change."

Earlier on Wednesday, pro-regime activists held a protest outside the embassy, burning Israeli and US flags.

The protesters also held banners reading slogans including "Britain's crimes cannot be forgotten."

Another protester held a banner with a picture of US President Donald Trump following the failed assassination attempt on July 13, with the caption "The Arrow doesn't always miss."

According to Agence France-Presse, the protesters included members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-affiliated Basij militia.

Basij militia members act as enforcers of the Islamic Regime, including violent suppression of anti-government protesters.
