Iraqi legislators called on the controversial parliamentary speaker to step down after an argument broke out between him and a lawmaker - an incident they apparently took to be the last straw.
The argument, which took place outside the chamber, dominated a previously scheduled session of the 275-member parliament that followed.
The Sunni Arab speaker, Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, did not attend the closed session, which was chaired by his deputy, Khaled al-Attiyah, a Shi'ite, according to lawmakers who attended the deliberations but spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.
